Some of us love breakfast, some of us don’t. Regardless, skipping breakfast can lead to hardening of the arteries, say heart specialists. You might find shocking that there are people out there who find the idea of breakfast unpalatable. There’s just something about the idea of taking a cold mixture of milk and cornflakes, or even worse, eggs. Should we remind you? Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And yet, some of us still skip breakfast like it’s a harmful habit. Life keeps us busy, you know? And suddenly, skipping breakfast becomes a regular thing.
To escalate, we should definitely eat breakfast. Science knows that. And research backs it up.
Skipping Breakfast Can Lead To Hardening of the Arteries
A recent study published in the JACC (Journal of the American College of Cardiology) empowers our knowledge with an understanding that people who eat breakfast have better cardiac health. This is because breakfast helps maintain cholesterol and body weight. Researchers also found that the condition called atherosclerosis directly connects to skipping breakfast.
Such A Small Meal, Yet So Important
Breakfast skippers are more likely to experience an overall unhealthy lifestyle. This means, often making poor diet choices, drinking alcohol, smoking, etc. In addition, people who skip breakfast are also more likely to be overweight or obese.
The researchers based this study on around 4000 men and women who were heard and kidney disease free. The evaluation was done through a computer survey. They escalated each individual’s caloric intake consumed in the morning.
- 3 percent Skipped Breakfast Overall
- 70 percent were practicing low-energy breakfasts
- And the rest of them were ”fully participating” in breakfast. (They consumed more than 20 percent of their full day calory intake)
Finally, the results were compared. Unlike “fully-participating” breakfast eaters, people who didn’t eat breakfast at all and those who had low-energy intake had a higher frequency of atherosclerosis. Those who skipped breakfast altogether also had the highest body mass index, blood pressure, fasting glucose levels, and greatest waist circumference.
Apart from directly connecting with hardening of the arteries and other cardiovascular risk factors, skipping breakfast can also result in leading an unhealthy life in general. Therefore, increase the chance of developing atherosclerosis. Or if you want the shorter version of this article: “Eat Breakfast”.
