Psoriasis – Types, Causes & Effective Treatments

psoriasis

Psoriasis is an inflammatory disease of the skin, which occasionally also affects the joints, causing redness, pain, and swelling.

Psoriasis can manifest itself with different intensity throughout life and it is not contagious. In fact, it affects approximately 7.5 million Americans and appears between the ages of 30 and 50.

Psoriasis starts in the immune system, especially in the lymphocytes. These cells activate inappropriately and different cellular responses arise, such as the proliferation and dilation of blood vessels. In the rest of people, the cellular change of the epidermis takes 30 days. However, in psoriasis patients, it last four days. This fact causes it to accumulate on the surface causing plaques of thick, peeling and reddish skin that produce itching or pain.

Causes

The origin of the disease is still unknown, however, but some consider to be genetic. In fact, the gene whose alliteration influences the appearance of the pathology has been located.

In addition, if one of the two parents is psoriatic, one out of eight children can suffer it. If both parents are affected, the probability rises to one in four. Next, we will discuss what causes it and how it manifests on the skin.

The Main Reason Why Psoriasis Appears:

  • Chronic infections
  • Stress
  • Obesity
  • Consumption of alcohol
  • Arthritis
  • Hormonal changes
  • Trauma (wounds, sunburn etc.)

Psoriasis can manifest slowly or appear suddenly. In addition, the symptoms may disappear for a period of time and reappear. The most common manifestations are skin lesions, and some of the rashes may be red and covered by whitish scales of different shape and size, some may be the size of a fingernail, but others might extend to cover large surfaces of the body, adopting a ring or spiral shape.

These are the most common types of psoriasis:

Usually, guttate psoriasis goes away in a few weeks without treatment. Tranquility and moisturizers help to soften the skin and may be enough care. The choice of treatment depends on the severity of the outbreak and the individual’s preferences.

Erythrodermic psoriasis

It is a rare inflammatory type of psoriasis that usually affects most of the body. It is characterized by very sharp and aggressive skin redness.
